However, according to Fast Company, internal investigations found no evidence the exploit actually occurred—the screenshots were fabricated. This mirrors a similar false claim about Chipotle's bot in March. Yet the underlying technical vulnerability these viral posts describe is entirely legitimate and represents a genuine risk for companies deploying AI customer service tools.
The security concern centers on a technique called 'prompt injection,' where users craft specific inputs designed to override a bot's hidden system instructions. These instructions typically define the bot's personality, limitations, and approved functions. When successful, prompt injection strips away the corporate guardrails and exposes the raw language model beneath—creating what security experts call a 'capability leak.' The challenge for companies is that large language models are engineered to respond fluidly to natural language rather than follow rigid rules, making it nearly impossible to prevent every potential exploit.
Real-world incidents demonstrate the serious consequences. Amazon's Rufus shopping assistant was successfully exploited to provide dangerous information—from locations to acquire hazardous chemicals to methods for minors to purchase alcohol illegally. Users also discovered Rufus was powered by Anthropic's premium Claude model and used a simple keyword filter, allowing them unpaid access to expensive enterprise software. Meanwhile, a Chevrolet dealership's ChatGPT bot was tricked into agreeing to sell a $76,000 vehicle for one dollar, and Air Canada's chatbot fabricated a discount policy that didn't exist, creating legal liability the airline ultimately couldn't escape.
For Charlotte-area businesses deploying AI customer service solutions, the lessons are clear: courts have ruled that companies are fully responsible for statements made by their AI systems, regardless of whether they're technically separate entities. The costs—legal bills, reputational damage, and processing fees from unauthorized use—can quickly exceed the expense of human customer service.
