Artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce faster than safety nets can adapt. A Gallup survey found that 18% of U.S. employees believe their jobs face elimination within five years, with that figure jumping to 23% among those in organizations that have already adopted AI. For Charlotte's growing technology and finance sectors—home to major employers and corporate headquarters—this trend carries particular urgency. Entry-level workers and those in administrative roles face the steepest risk, according to the Brookings Institution, which identified 15 million college graduates in jobs highly exposed to AI displacement.

Several pilot programs are testing financial and skill-building interventions to cushion this transition. The AI Dividend provides $1,000 monthly stipends to displaced workers paired with career coaching through partnerships between the Fund for Guaranteed Income and What We Will. Meanwhile, City Year operates in 29 cities nationwide—potentially expanding to a 30th—offering young adults $25,000 stipends plus education credits in exchange for community service as Student Success Coaches. A City Year white paper reported 91% of alumni secured employment or higher education within 12 months of program completion.

Despite these initiatives, the scale remains insufficient. The Fund for Guaranteed Income has distributed $25 million over five years, a fraction of what's needed to address growing displacement. For Charlotte-area workers seeking retraining, the challenge is steeper: limited public funding exists for adult education programs, leaving displaced professionals to navigate career transitions largely on their own. Darrell West, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, notes that while students receive abundant financial aid for initial education, those losing jobs to automation lack comparable safety nets.

Experts emphasize this represents a structural economic shift, not a temporary disruption. Expanding existing programs from roughly $1 billion annually to $10-20 billion could meaningfully scale solutions, according to City Year leadership. For Charlotte's business community, this reality underscores an emerging challenge: how to support workforce transitions while adapting talent pipelines to an AI-driven economy. Without coordinated policy action and private-sector investment now, the region risks significant labor market disruption in coming years.
